In Memory Of The Mighty Men Of Mymms

When the headmaster of Welham Green Boys' School, Benjamin Mallett, heard that many of his former pupils had died during the 1914-1918 Great War, he honoured them with the title the Mighty Men of Mymms. 100 years later their stories are told.

The North Mymms war memorial outside North Mymms Park has the names of 60 local men who are known to have died in WWI and WWII. On one side of the octagonal base are listed the names of the 40 who died in the so-called Great War of 1914-18. On the other side are the names of the 20 'who fell' in the 1939 - 1945 war.

The memorial is on a triangular piece of land set back at the point where Tollgate Road meets Dixons Hill Road, (grid reference TL 22329 04688). Visitors are able to park close to the monument, and also in St Mary's Church Lane just over the bridge. There are benches for those who want to rest during their visit.
